SDK Reporting: Calculate and share without lifting a finger

Late in 2017 we rolled out a revamped Secure Data Kit that we’re calling...wait for it….SDK 2! We’re geniuses, right? Part of that rollout was a big upgrade to SDK Reporting. The first iteration of Secure Data Kit was all about collecting and organizing data. We made it easy to get data into SDK via mobile, SMS, API, CSV, etc. You could then organize and manage the data.

The critical piece missing was doing something with the data. What good is all this data if you can’t visualize it? Report on it? Measure it? With SDK 2 we took a big step towards solving that problem. We’re already seeing clients utilizing these new features to save time and get more meaning from their data. Here’s a story about one such success.

A client recently reached out to us and said “hey, I have a survey where I ask our customers to tell us on a scale of 1-10 whether they’d refer us to a friend. We use that data to calculate net promoter score and then we share that data with upper management”

We said “hey, that’s cool! So what’s the issue?”

To which they responded “It’s a lot of work!” They collected surveys, download the data, and then scrubbed the data to clean out unfinished responses, bad data, the usual. From there they uploaded it to a free NPS tool that calculated the score.

Finally, they took all the data, put it into a pretty report, and send it on to leadership. All told, they spent 5-10 hours a week on this.

When they told us about this process, we thought to ourselves “SDK Reporting! We can solve this!”. We then danced which is what we do at Secure Data Kit when we know we can solve a problem.

We started by using our API layer to automatically import their survey data into SDK (note: we also have our own survey tools!). We scrubbed, cleaned, and managed the data as it was imported. So this saves at least 2 hours.

SDK Reporting has a variety of features, ranging from canned reports that describe the data to an integration with the popular data science language, R. We used R to calculate a NPS score overall and by location, identify promoters and detractors, and view changes to the NPS score over time. We were able to improve the value of the NPS report with the additional analysis. This saves at least 5 hours.

Lastly, SDK Reporting allows reports to be scheduled on a nightly/weekly basis to be sent out to stakeholders. This takes the output and can bundle it into a nice and tidy PDF that is emailed to key stakeholders. The report can be attached directly to the email so they don’t have to log into SDK or leave their favorite email client. This saves at least 2 hours and more important, keeps you from accidentally emailing the report to the wrong team.
